Welcome to Medicare’s Annual Election Period (AEP), the time of year Medicare recipients can change health insurance options.During AEP, many seniors opt to change plans. If you find yourself considering a different plan, here are 3 helpful tips to follow.

  • Make sure you have your correct identification card by January 1st. If you sign up for a new health plan during the Annual Election Period (AEP), you should have your new health plan identification card by January 1, 2013. If you don’t receive it, call your insurance company.

  • Let your doctor know if you change health plans. Even if you are not scheduled to visit anytime soon, let your doctor’s office know when you change health plans. This helps ensure continuity in your care.

  • Keep up to a 30 day supply of medicine on hand between plan changes. Having an extra supply of medicine is precautionary, especially for anyone taking daily prescriptions.
